The Mets have fielded calls on many pitchers, including Zack Wheeler, Noah Syndergaard, Seth Lugo and Jason Vargas. But perhaps the biggest trade deadline development is the heavy interest in Edwin Diaz, which has increased the likelihood that he will be moved.
First, a mea culpa. A few days ago I tweeted that Diaz wasn't going anywhere -- which was the sense at the time through sources, but worded too definitively. The widespread interest, which reflects a belief in Diaz's talent over his mixed results this year, has increased the chances that Diaz will, in fact, go somewhere.
Diaz has broad appeal to teams that want to contend both this year and next. Accordingly, the Dodgers, Reds, Brewers and White Sox are among the clubs that have expressed interest.
The Yankees are another team that could fit, if they pivot from pursuing a starter to a reliever. For either Syndergaard or Diaz, the teams would agree that Deivi Garcia would start a package. It would get more complicated from there. Obviously, Gleyber Torres would not be a part of any package.
