Mike Trout and Alex Bregman may have been the latest players to secure long-term extensions on Tuesday, but for Didi Gregorius and Dellin Betances, they will have to wait.
According to Jon Heyman, the Yankees are "nowhere close" to a deal with either player despite interest in extending both of them earlier this spring, as SNY's Andy Martino reported.
The two players, who are both eligible for free agency after the season, were thought to be next in line for extensions after the Yankees struck team-friendly deals with Luis Severino and Aaron Hicks at the start of Spring Training.
Gregorius, 29, will miss at least the first half of the 2019 season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery while it was decided on Tuesday that Betances would also start the season on the injured list with right shoulder impingement and inflammation
The injury will likely further delay negotiations for the soon-to-be 31-year-old right-handed reliever.
