Sign stealing has been a big bugaboo for the MLB in the wake of the Astros cheating scandal, but as SNY's Andy Martino found out, Houston believed other teams were using technology to decode signs as well.
On Tuesday, The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Evan Drellich reported that the Yankees biggest rival, the Red Sox, were allegedly using a video replay room to steal signs during the 2018 season.
To give some context, the Red Sox -- and the Yankees -- were both fined back in 2017 "for conduct related to electronic sign stealing." Those video replay rooms, which were implemented to help managers get information quickly in potential challenge situations, were being used to steal sign sequences.
Heading into the 2018 season, the league clearly stated that no team is allowed to use that room for sign stealing. It looks like the Red Sox didn't listen.
Boston went on to win the AL East after securing 108 wins, and would win the World Series that October as well. And while it was pointed out that the process wasn't too effective -- and a guard was stationed by the replay room to make sure players wouldn't enter during the postseason -- it's still worth noting because of how dominant the Red Sox were that year. They went on to lead the league in runs scored.
The act itself is still cheating, and one source didn't care about how effective or ineffective the process was.
"It's cheating," the person told The Athletic. "Because if you're using a camera to zoom in on the crotch of the catcher, to break down the sign system, and then take that information and give it out to the runner, then he doesn't have to steal it."
MLB's investigation has yet to lay down any punishment to the Astros in their case, but it may have to broaden to the Sox' staff as well as this would be a violation of the rules. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, discipline against the Astros could be coming in the "next two weeks," and his sources believe it will be "harsh."
In that 2018 season, New York won 100 games and made the postseason as a Wild Card team. They would go on to lose to the Sox in the ALDS after four games.
