The Yankees optioned struggling reliever Chad Green to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday.
The 27-year-old right-hander, who excelled in 2017 and 2018 after transitioning from a starting role to the bullpen, has a 16.43 ERA in 7.2 inning so far this season.
He nearly cost the Yankees the game Tuesday night when he allowed four runs. In his previous outing he allowed three runs without recording an out.
LHP Stephen Tarpley was recalled to take Green's place.
As expected, the Yankees activated Gary Sánchez from the injured list after he recovered from a left calf strain. He should be in the Yankees' lineup Wednesday night. Kyle Higashioka was optioned to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to make room for Sánchez.
Sánchez has a 1.065 OPS with six homers and 11 RBI in 11 games.
