The Yankees, who are still searching for rotation help after trading for J.A. Happ, are still scouting Mets RHP Zack Wheeler, reports SNY's Andy Martino.
The Yanks will be in on Wheeler until he's moved elsewhere or the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline passes, but it seems unlikely the Mets and Yankees will agree on a deal, notes Martino.
There is heavy interest in Wheeler, but with the Mets so far not getting offers they feel are worthy, they are sending mixed messages regarding whether they'll trade Wheeler.
Wheeler, 28, has a 4.11 ERA (3.57 FIP) and 1.28 WHIP with 116 strikeouts in 120.1 innings (20 starts) this season.
He is making $1.9 million this season and under team control through next season, when he'll be eligible for salary arbitration the final time.
In addition to Wheeler, the Yankees have been linked to Rays RHP Chris Archer, who Tampa Bay is seeking a king's ransom for. The 29-year-old is under team control through the 2021 season.
