Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka had his streak of 21 2/3 straight innings without giving up a run end when he allowed a solo home run to Mookie Betts in the fifth inning of Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Tanaka, who last allowed a run on July 15, took a shutout into the fifth inning Sunday when Betts lined a 2-0 cutter over the Green Monster to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.
Since giving up a two-run homer to Edwin Encarnacion in the fourth inning on July 15, Tanaka hadn't given up a run in nearly 22 straight innings. He threw a three-hit shutout against the Tampa Bay Rays on July 24 and threw six scoreless innings in his previous outing on July 31.
On Sunday, Tanaka struck out nine batters and allowed six hits but only lasted 4 2/3 innings, throwing 97 pitches. He threw 33 pitches through the first two innings but needed to throw 24 pitches in the third inning and 25 in the fourth.
