Every Monday, we'll be taking a look at how the Yankees' top prospects (their MLB.com Yankees Top-30 rankings are in parenthesis) are faring.
Deivi Garcia, RHP, Double-A Trenton (No. 1, MLB No. 66) -- ETA 2020
Garcia, who has played at three levels this season, vaulted to MLB Pipeline's No. 1 ranking in the Yankees system and No. 66 in MLB. Garcia went six innings and allowed four runs in his latest start for the RailRiders. In 82 2/3 combined innings, Garcia owns a 3.38 ERA and has struck out 128 batters.
Estevan Florial, OF, High-A Tampa (No. 2, MLB No. 67) -- ETA 2021
Florial was dropped from the No. 1 perch, which is unsurprising considering the disappointing season and Garcia's rise. Florial has six hits in his last 24 at-bats and is hitting just .227 for the season.
Luis Gil, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 4) -- ETA 2022
Gil made a huge jump in the rankings, going from No. 13 to No. 4. Gil has done it by dominating Low-A hitters, which finally paid off in a promotion to High-A Tampa. In Gil's first start for the Tarpons, he tossed six innings of two-run ball with five strikeouts.
Clarke Schmidt, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 5) -- ETA 2020
Schmidt's stock according to MLB Pipeline is unchanged as he remains in the No. 5 spot. In two starts this week, Clarke hurled a total of 11 1/3 innings, allowing five runs, while taking the loss in Sunday's game. Clarke possesses a 3.38 ERA in 53 1/3 innings with Tampa.
Albert Abreu, RHP, Double-A Trention (No. 7) -- ETA 2020
Abreu dropped to No. 7 on the Yanks list, but more alarming is that he hit the injured list with soreness in his right biceps, which required an MRI. Abreu has thrown 82 2/3 innings this season, turning in a 3.81 ERA and 1.61 WHIP. Abreu has thrown over 100 innings in just one pro season, when he reached 101 2/3 innings in 2016.
Yoendrys Gomez, RHP, Low-A Charleston (No. 8) -- ETA 2022
Gomez, 19 years old, leapt from No. 27 to No. 8 on MLB Pipeline's rankings. Gomez allowed four runs in six innings in his first start for Charleston. Gomez had thrown 29 2/3 innings for Pulaski to the tune of a 2.12 ERA.
Anthony Volpe, 2B, Rookie Advanced Pulaski (No. 11) -- ETA 2023
Volpe, the Yankees first round pick in the 2019 First Year Player Draft (No. 30 overall), enters MLB Pipeline's rankings at No. 11. Volpe is hitting .314 with a homer and three RBI over his last 10 games after a very slow start with Pulaski (his overall average sits at .207 across 87 at-bats.
Trevor Stephan, RHP, High-A Tampa (No. 16) -- ETA 2019
Stephan dropped to No. 8 from No. 16, but maybe he's in for a turnaround after tossing a seven-inning no-hitter on Friday. Stephen, who struck out nine in the ballgame, appeared poised for a strong 2019 season after a solid 2018 campaign. However, Stephan had a rough go at Double-A Trenton, resulting in a demotion to Tampa. Even after the no-hitter, Stephan's ERA stands at 5.97 and hitters have hit .265 against him in 60 1/3 combined innings this season.
