Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer, Masahiro Tanaka limited the Tigers to just one run, and the Yankees held on for a 2-1 victory on Saturday. >> Box score
1) The Yankees only had two hits in the entire game, but made the most of one of them in the fifth inning when Torres put the Yankees in front with one swing. His two-run homer put the Yankees on the board and provided the only offense of the day for the Yankees.
2) Victor Martinez's sacrifice fly in the first inning would account for the Tigers' only run of the game, as Tanaka managed to limit most of the damage despite allowing seven hits. Tanaka walked one batter and struck out six.
3) Jonathan Holder pitched a scoreless eighth inning and Dellin Betances pitched the ninth to earn his second save.
The Yankees will need someone in the rotation to step it up heading into a potential wild card game. Tanaka is certainly capable of being that pitcher.
After a fantastic month of July (1.75 ERA in 25 2/3 innings), Tanaka endured a couple rough outings in August which bloated his ERA for the month (4.40 in 28 2/3 innings). Todays' effort demonstrated that Tanaka can handle getting out of tough situations, something that might be required in a playoff scenario.
Big hits will also be needed in the potential wild card game, and Torres once again looks like a player that can deliver. After dropping into a tailspin when he returned from the disabled list, Torres turned things around on what seemed a dime and hasn't slowed down since the middle of August. Including today's 1-for-3 effort with the game-winning home run, Torres is hitting .420 in his last 14 games with four homers and 11 RBIs. Torres' average has jumped 24 points since August 16 and has propelled him back into the Rookie of the Year conversation.
