With the Yankees entering the 2020 season as the heavy favorites to win the World Series, the ZiPS projections certainly make that seem possible.
The annual projections from Dan Szymborski/FanGraphs see Gleyber Torres hitting more home runs than Aaron Judge, another dominant season from Gerrit Cole and a bounceback season from Giancarlo Stanton.
However, their projections for Gio Urshela and Mike Tauchman see the duo taking a step back from their breakout seasons last year.
Projecting not just Torres' 2020 but also his future, Szymborski wrote that "his upside can best be described as 'monster' and the Yankees should already be thinking long-term contract extension."
Torres had a stellar 2019 for New York, slashing .278/.337/.535 and hitting 38 home runs in a season that saw him be basically the only Yankee to remain healthy throughout the year.
ZiPS projects that Torres will hit just under his number from last year at .272, but he'll jump up to a whopping 41 home runs as well -- eight more than Judge is projected to hit. He's also projected to jump up to 115 RBI after driving in 90 runs last season.
The ZiPS projections also have DJ LeMahieu leading the Yankees in batting average again this season at .293.
Cole's first season in New York looks to be another good one, with the ace projected to lead the team in wins (16), ERA (3.10), strikeouts (280), IP (200.0) and FIP (2.89).
The AL Cy Young runner-up went on a tear last season after his first few starts, winning 16 straight games to reach 20 wins after starting 4-5. Cole was third in the league with a 2.50 ERA, while leading the way in strikeouts with 326.
Stanton played just 18 games for the Yankees last season as he dealt with numerous injuries over the course of the year. Barring any big injury, ZiPS projects a solid return to form for the slugger.
In 494 projected at-bats, ZiPS has Stanton slashing .257/.344/.571, while leading the Yankees in home runs (43) and RBI (116).
