NEW YORK -- It was a bright day for American men's tennis on Thursday at the U.S. Open, but Uncle Sam's future in the game appears somewhat cloudy.

Even before Andy Roddick stepped on court for a late night match in Arthur Ashe Stadium, No. 21 James Blake, No. 22 Sam Querrey, 6-foot-9 John Isner and Jesse Witten, a four-time All-America out of Kentucky, had all advanced to the third round.

On the women's side, Melanie Oudin, a 17-year-old from Marietta, Ga., pulled off the upset of the tournament, stunning No. 4 Elena Dementieva in four sets to reach the third round.
