Pat Shurmur believes the Giants are "very close" to becoming a playoff team.
The head coach stated his belief on a conference call Monday following a 28-27 loss on the road to the Indianapolis Colts, which dropped the Giants record to 5-10.
"I think we are," Shurmur said. "You have to go out and takes these wins. Nobody gives you anything...in this league you have to go out and take it and find ways to get a victory at the end of the game."
The Giants led for most of the game on Sunday vs. the Colts, who moved into the sixth spot in the AFC playoff picture with the victory.
They jumped out to an early 14-0 lead and led 27-21 mid-way through the fourth quarter but the defense was unable to come up with a big stop on the final Colts drive, which led to a go-ahead touchdown pass from Andrew Luck to Chester Rogers with 55 seconds left.
The Giants still had a chance to get into field goal range before time expired but Eli Manning threw an interception on a ball deep down the middle of the field to seal the game.
"It's a painful process until we're winning all these games at the end and not just a few," Shurmur said. "We all know it comes down to a few critical plays at the end."
