Jets rookie QB Sam Darnold was honest when asked if he wanted to be the starter in Week 1.
"The competitor in me, yeah, I want to start," Darnold said on Wednesday while making his first comments since ending his brief holdout.
Darnold went on to say that he knows it will be up to the coaches and that he welcomes competition, noting his relationships with Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater.
Darnold also opened up about his holdout that ended Monday, with him then jogging on the field to a slow clap from his teammates.
"It sucked watching them ... at the same time, I knew it was necessary," he said, adding that he was able to work out and threw a couple of times at a local high school during the holdout.
And Darnold said he didn't really feel rusty when he returned.
"Honestly, I felt really good on Monday," he said. "No matter if I had rust or not, I feel like all that kind of went away."
