The Mets' farm system has taken a bit of a hit this winter with the trades of Jarred Kelenic, Justin Dunn and others, and that hit was reflected on the new Baseball Prospectus Top 101 prospects list.
INF Andres Gimenez (No. 38) and 1B Peter Alonso (No. 40) are the only Mets on the list, while Kelenic -- who was dealt to Seattle along with Dunn and others in the deal that brought Edwin Diaz and Robinson Cano to New York -- came in at No. 63.
As far as the rest of the NL East, the Braves led all MLB teams with eight players in the Top 100, while the representation from the Phillies (two), Nationals (three), and Marlins (two) fell more in line with where the Mets currently find themselves.
Gimenez, who finished last season with Double-A Binghamton, is expected to open the 2019 season there. The 20-year-old was recently named the shortstop on MLB Pipeline's all defense team.
If Gimenez performs well in Double-A this season, he can expect a promotion to Triple-A at some point during the year. And if the Mets have a need -- or if Gimenez forces their hand with his play -- a promotion to the majors in 2019 is possible.
The 24-year-old Alonso has been talked up by GM Brodie Van Wagenen all offseason, with Van Wagenen saying Alonso has a legitimate chance to be the team's first baseman on opening day -- despite the fact that having Alonso on the team that early in the season would mean the Mets forfeiting a year of team control.
But while Alonso seems ready for the majors, it's hard to see him making the roster from the get-go now that the team has four other starting infielders (Robinson Cano, Jed Lowrie, Amed Rosario, and Todd Frazier).
The Mets could clear room for Alonso by trading Frazier, which would allow them to use Lowrie at third base and play Alonso at first base. However, Van Wagenen said earlier this month that the team does not intend to trade Frazier.
