Seven Takeaways from Monday's game
1) Steven Matz put the Mets in an early hole Sunday night, giving up a solo home run to Jorge Alfaro in the top of the second inning. The early scoring continued on into the third frame when Jon Berti hit a two-out double out to left-center field and Miguel Rojas brought him home with a RBI-single.
2) Todd Frazier had two opportunities to put the Mets on the board and combat the scoring from Miami, coming up to bat with two outs in the first with the bases loaded and again up to the plate with two outs and runners on first and second. But Frazier was unable to make anything happen, popping it up and sending the runners back into the dugout in both attempts at the plate.
3) Pete Alonso added his name to another spot in the Mets franchise record book after hitting a single in the bottom of the third inning. With the hit, Alonso crossed 335 bases this season, breaking David Wright's single season record of 334, which he set back in 2008.
4) After throwing two scoreless innings, LHP Steven Matz (10-10, 4.37 ERA) fell apart in the sixth, allowing three straight singles to load the bases for Jorge Alfaro, who proceeded to crush the ball out to center field for a grand slam. Matz finished the game giving up six earned runs on nine hits in five-plus innings pitched. The grand slam was the first New York has given up this season.
5) With the Mets down 6-0 in the bottom of the sixth with two outs and the bases once again loaded, Amed Rosario came through and hit a game-changing grand slam -- the second of his career -- to open things up for New York and get them back into this game. This was the first time two teams hit a grand slam each in the same inning since 2008.
6) In relief at the top of the seventh, RHP Walker Lockett quickly put two men on base for the Marlins before being relieved by RHP Brad Brach. After manager Mickey Callaway chose to walk Jorge Alfaro and load up the bases, Harold Ramirez grounded the ball to first and reached on an impressive run to first, beating out Brach to the base and bringing in two runs for his effort.
7) J.D. Davis ended the game 3 for 5 as the only Mets batter with more than one hit in the game. Davis looks likely to finish the season above a .300 batting average along with Jeff McNeil.
